DOWNTOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD ASSOCIATION

Winnipeg Police Service Downtown Safety Strategy

Hello neighbours,

Today the Winnipeg Police Service announced it’s Downtown Safety Strategy, as part of the new Strategic Plan 2012-2014 (on page 24).

Click here to download the full Strategic Plan.
At our last meeting, we discussed our ideas on how to improve safety downtown, including:

  • Clarifying the roles of the Cadets (aka Blue Coats) and Downtown BIZ ambassadors (aka Red Coats);
  • Extending the time, reach, and presence of Cadets in our area (for example, a stronger presence in the Broadway-Assiniboine area after dark);
  • Creating a “beat/corner/community cop” environment, rather than Cadets/police simply driving around;
  • Dealing with public intoxication in the area;
  • Building a relationship between residents and the Cadets/Police;
  • Working with existing community and social service groups to address these issues and provide resources to the area’s homeless/panhandling population;
  • Densifying the area to make it more active after regular business hours.

The Report highlights the Winnipeg Police Service’s intention to increase the hours of foot patrols and bike patrols in the area, as well as more consultation with the area’s stakeholders (which hopefully includes us!). It also highlights the Police’s role in Prevention through Environmental Design Assessments (think about walking through  those surface parking lots at night, past empty colourless walls, or when streetlights go out!)

This new report will be a topic of discussion at tomorrow’s meeting.
