Our Third Meeting!

Hello Neighbours!

Another wonderful get-together was held on Thursday, August 16th at the Starbucks on Broadway. Great to see representation from Holiday Towers!

At this meeting we discussed the distribution of posters, a final edit to the vision/mission statements, and our plans leading up to the Downtown BIZ’s ManyFest celebrations including the development of a banner and information pamphlet.

We also began discussing how to address some of the most pressing issues in our community such as:

  • Resident turn over rates
  • Poverty
  • Safety
  • Environmental (such as composting, recycling)
  • Built environment (development, parks, roads, bike paths)
  • Community creativity
  • Community cohesion (gettin’ to know your neighbours)
  • Resources and communication (consultation with residents)
  • Event resources
  • “Meet your neighbourhood agencies”
  • Side walks / construction

We discussed compiling educational materials and links that could help serve downtown residents, including information on tenants’ rights, recycling/composting, clinics, groceries and (outreach to the Forks Market as a great resource for residents’ shopping), as well as getting in touch with other interest groups in the area (like Green Action Centre) to help with educational programming/workshops for the community on environmental issues (as an example).

We discussed our communications strategy: developing a media  advisory introducing our group, developing a Facebook “Page” and Twitter account, and finalizing a draft logo.

We also discussed encouraging members to link their Instagram accounts to the DCRA pages for members who take photos downtown – it could make an interesting “living mosaic” of our community.

Finally, we discussed the DCRA’s meeting schedule, and have moved the next meeting to Monday, August 20th at 6:30pm at the Starbucks on Broadway so other residents who are unavailable on Thursday can participate. We discussed which day of the week would work best for as many people as possible, and will be soliciting availability from residents.
