Thank you for an excellent and productive meeting this past Thursday at the Starbucks on Broadway. We’re glad to see some representation join us from Fort Garry Place (85 Garry St.)!
At yesterday’s meeting we discussed the proposed Mission Statement and Vision Statement, as well as Scope of the organization. Check out the draft of these documents, and feel free to email your thoughts or stop by our next meeting!
We talked about many issues facing our community, including parking, poverty, and most importantly: getting our neighbours involved.
To this end, we’ve developed an initial poster to hang up in our respective apartment buildings to get our neighbours involved. The poster directs people to the blog and the email address, as well as gives a brief description of the organization. You can DOWNLOAD the poster here: association_poster_04-1
Please print it at home, and put it up in your apartment’s common areas or talk to your caretaker/landlord about having it placed in elevators or other suitable locations. We’ve also asked the Downtown BIZ to print a few copies that we can distribute to buildings and businesses in the neighbourhood! We will also distribute posters at our next meeting.
We discussed outreach goals, including setting up a table at the ManyFest/Ciclovia/Lights on Broadway events that take place September 7 – 9th. We will develop a banner for the table, information handouts and a sign-up sheet to try to reach as many residents and community members as possible.
Building from this momentum, we will be planning our first large community meeting for mid- to late September. Locations discussed were the Millennium Library boardrooms, the Broadway Disciples Church, the Union Centre. We will also need to develop an agenda for this meeting. If you have any other suggestions for location and/or agenda items, please let us know via email or come to the next meeting.
We determined that we would continue holding neighbourly “casual” meetings at the Fyxx on Broadway every Thursday at 6:30pm for folks to drop-in and chat to help build our organization. Our secondary location is the Starbucks on Broadway (across the street).
We’re very excited with this new group! One member said:
“I’ve always thought about getting a community group together for our neighbourhood, and I’m glad its finally starting!”
Please stop by our next meeting or click here to get involved!
P.S. a special thanks to Stephano Grande and Jason Syvixay of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ for being so supportive and encouraging as our group develops!
